The Honor Of A Life Branded
The Sky has no Limits with Sonya Lowery….
We were so excited to speak with Sonya Lowery. Why we love Sonya. She’s an inspiration to any woman or man, who ever dared to do something different, and thought outside the box. She dreams, achieves, and lives her Life Brand.
Sonya Lowery was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. When she was just five years old, her parents moved to Northern Maryland – she has made Maryland home. In 1999, Lowery became an entrepreneur and has since become an author, speaker, cover model and mom. These experiences have taken Lowery around the world for both business and pleasure and prepared her for her current role as Host of World Next Door TV. In her many travels, she has discovered a very interesting fact – that most people don’t know the treasures that lie hidden in plain sight in their own back yards.
After learning that Sonya woke up one day and decided to make her 40’s what her 20’s and 30’s were not, we were inspired by her “Bucket List” lifestyle. She has experienced adventures that many dare to dream about. Rather than think and ponder, Sonya goes out and achieves her goals and shares them with us weekly. Her blog is a go to destination for the latest and greatest in the DC, Virginia, and Maryland area. She has plans to venture out across the country, and take us on her journey. Her web T.V. series are much like a close and personal travel channel, except we can actually communicate with the host. She responds by email, and her monthly newsletter, which she encourages us all to be a part of. She also has an incredible facebook fan page, where we can keep up with her latest adventures.
We encourage you all to come along on Sonya’s journey by joining!
Here’s what Sonya had to say to L+B…
I wish I was…..
Independently wealthy – because then I wouldn’t have to think twice about the places I want to go or the things I want to do. I could be a lot more spontaneous.
I’m honestly afraid of….
Living an unfulfilled life – I have a bucket list and I hope that on my 90th birthday, I have seen every continent and every “Wonder of the World” and tasted the food and the wine from every country… then I can start to think about settling down.
My favorite place is….
Italy, between the food, the wine, and the history – it’s heaven!
My biggest regrets…..
That my children aren’t closer in age. I would have loved for them to go to college together and travel together… and leave the house together.
Someday I hope to….
Be Oprah – or someone like her, she can do it all – and I believe I can too…
What I love to do more than anything is…..
EAT, TRAVEL & LAUGH! (And shop, and cook, and…)
My biggest pet peeve is….
Social rejection of someone that is different. I hate people who hate people for no reason. Whether it’s race, sexuality, or religious beliefs – we don’t have to understand everything about one another to love one another… I know – kumbaya…
The best advice I’ve ever been given….
People doing nothing, want you to do nothing with them – People going nowhere want you to go nowhere with them. Show me your 5 closest friends and I’ll tell you who you are – If you want to change your life – change your friends!…
What is next for you…..
With God’s help – Television!
What is your guilty pleasure….
A large pepperoni pizza with extra extra sauce.
What does Genuine Elegance means to you….
Humility, a genuine smile, and an inner glow that can light up a room.
Tell us…. How did you start World Next Door?
I had grown tired of the social limitations of my graphic design business. I couldn’t get out and meet people and it seemed as if life was passing me by. Then in February, I turned 40. I felt that everything was about to start really going downhill. So I started jotting down all of the things that I hadn’t done yet in my life. Things that I would’ve regretted not doing if my life suddenly ended – My Bucket List! I developed this “bucket list” show idea because another television opportunity had fallen through. I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and not let a closed door stop me from opening my own door. I developed Sonya Lowery’s World Next Door for people like me who wanted to get out of the house and try something new. Even though my show wasn’t going to be on television, I was going to try to develop it with that goal in mind.
What is your background?
My background is all over the place – but I knew that all of my experiences would help the show. I’m a graphic designer, a tomboy, a former model, and an author. Which means I can design anything, get dirty, clean-up nice, and then write an article about it.
What is the inspiration behind World Next Door?
The first being my boys. I want them to know that they can do ANYTHING. I also want them to know that when someone tells you “you can’t” it means that “they can’t” – so keep trying. The second inspiration is that life does not end at forty. People my age like adventure too! So I’ll try anything once…
How would you like to impact people through your website and experience?
I would like to show that life is to be lived. You don’t get to come back and do it again. I don’t want to look back on my life and only be able to count the hours I spent sitting behind a desk. I’ve decided to make like a tennis shoe and “just do it!”
How did you discover your passion for adventure and travel?
I have always loved trying new things for as long as I can remember – climbing trees, go-carts, playing football in elementary school. I was never the girl who jumped rope or was on the cheerleading squad – I wasn’t girlie enough. I was considered one of the boys for the longest time – until I started liking them… then I tried make-up. At 19, I got my first pay-check from my first real job – I booked a flight to Mexico with two girlfriends and haven’t looked back since.
How would you describe World Next Door?
WorldNextDoorTV.com is a travel and adventure show about cool things to do in the Washington Metropolitan area. The 3-minute “travel shorts” expose and hopefully help local small businesses.
What part of Sonya’s DNA is in World Next Door?
All of it. I designed the look and developed the site (with the help of a friend), I write the articles, I decide who to showcase, I choose the music, write the scripts, and maintain the site, the Facebook fan page, and the twitter page (which I’m not good at yet). That’s a lot to do when you’re also running a graphic design business and running a household as a single mother of two… whew… I’m getting tired just thinking about it
